What is the lead time for a HVDC substation actually?

As offshore wind farms move further from shore to access better wind resources, reduce crowding, and permitting conflicts, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems are emerging as the preferred transmission solution.

However, delivery lead times for HVDC substations are longer than for HVAC, due to increased complexity, a limited supplier base and longer production cycles, making them a critical constraint and an essential element in project planning for developers and policymakers alike.

Aegir Insights has developed a first-of-its-kind benchmark for HVDC offshore substation lead times in the North Sea, available to our clients, based on a bottom-up, data-driven analysis of +100 data points from past and planned deployments.

With 61 GW of HVDC projects in the North Sea already targeting CODs in the early 2030s, demand is accelerating, which could further extend lead times beyond the averages we are seeing today.

Reach out to us here to get access to our benchmark and to discuss how you can best plan for HVDC timelines in a tightening supply chain landscape.
