Italy has seen a rush of interest in floating offshore wind from both domestic and international developers.
In October, the Italian grid transmission company Terna announced it received a staggering 39 grid connection applications for offshore wind projects.
But where are the most competitive projects?
As part of our BigFloat intelligence series, Aegir Insights recently evaluated the offshore wind market in Italy, which will be predominantly floating due to deep waters.
With Aegir Quant, we analyzed the prospective floating areas, meaning areas with depths ranging from 60-1300 meters and an average wind speed above 6 m/s.
We found LCoE levels ranging from 70 to more than 100 EUR/MWh, and several developers already converging around the most competitive site locations. Given Italy’s ‘open door’ licensing approach, we anticipate the crowding to continue, with high competition to secure route-to-market.
