Are you up-to-date on the growing offshore wind ambitions in Southern Europe?
South Europe is upping its offshore wind ambitions: France, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain together have a massive technical potential for offshore wind, with 200 GW fixed-bottom and 1,500 GW floating offshore wind in estimated potential between them.
Particularly the large floating potential draws attention, as it gives greater siting flexibility and a unique supply chain opportunity.
Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and Greece have all stated offshore wind targets
As of today, all five markets have stated 2030 targets or ambitions in some form, with the combined fixed-bottom and floating ambitions amounting to 18.5 GW offshore wind by 2030 – a huge boost from today’s level of only ~60 MW in operation in the same five markets.
Whilst this is a substantial gap to fill, the first commercial-scale projects are well in progress. The current geopolitical situation increases focus on renewables, and EU initiatives to speed up permitting could help keep growth on track.
