Can Spain become a floating wind supply chain hub and catch up with North European offshore wind markets in the floating wind sector?
As floating wind matures, the Spanish authorities are eyeing a big supply chain opportunity. Spain is already well-versed in export of wind industry components and even floating wind turbine foundations and concepts, despite not having domestic offshore wind farms yet.
In late 2021, Spain published a roadmap for offshore wind with a target of 1-3 GW floating offshore wind by 2030 and earmarked 200 million euros for research and development related to floating offshore wind technology.
Large industry interest in Spain’s offshore wind market
The offshore wind industry seems ready to deliver on Spanish supply chain ambitions, having announced a storm of projects under early development in Spanish waters. And developer interest in Spain seems to be increasing.
The Canary Islands have a myriad of small and demo-scale projects in planning and development, while peninsular Spain has larger, commercial-scale projects. Both types of projects are needed to power R&D and ready Spain’s domestic supply chain for export opportunities. But which projects look most realistic and cost-competitive?
