More than 60 GW of offshore wind lease rights or offtake contracts can be awarded this year!
2023 is going to be a very busy year, with new offshore wind markets getting started in both Europe, Americas and APAC. A few highlights of what is coming:
Europe: A handful of matured markets such as UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and Belgium will be tendering out substantial capacity. Several of these auctions will be subsidy free and have new features to prioritize speed of deployment. For instance, Denmark will auction 9 GW to be deployed by 2030, and Germany will be awarding 1 GW in the Baltic Sea before pre-investigations are complete. On top of these speedy developments, the European offshore wind market is expanding geographically with auctions planned in several countries new to commercial-scale offshore wind: Norway, Lithuania, and potentially Spain and Portugal.
Americas: The states of New York and New Jersey* will be awarding offtake contracts for up to a combined 8,5 GW in 2023, and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management will lease out substantial acreage of seabed in the Central Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico. Colombia and potentially Brazil and Uruguay will look to allocate seabed as well and put South America on the offshore wind map. Uruguay is a market to watch, as there are ambitions to offer large offshore leases specifically for development of offshore energy to green hydrogen production.
APAC: The long awaited lease auction in India is expected to commence soon, as is the Gippsland feasibility license round in Australia. Japan plans to award offtake contracts across four promotion areas, and Taiwan will award 3 GW of capacity.
