2025 was the biggest year ever for onshore wind

2025 was the biggest year ever for onshore wind. The world added around 155 GW, up 42% on 2024. One country built almost three-quarters of it.

China added roughly 114 GW last year, about 73% of the global total. Put another way: In 2025 China alone built more onshore wind than the entire world had ever added in a single year, topping even the previous global record set in 2024.

This is not a one-off. China has been pulling ahead for over a decade. In 2011 it was around 43% of new global onshore wind. Now, in 2025, it is 73%. Over that stretch China's annual build grew roughly sevenfold, while the rest of the world did not even double.

So is onshore wind now simply China's market? Aegir Insights' forecast suggests the balance is about to shift:

• China stays number one, but its lead narrows. Its share falls from 70%+ today to somewhere between 50% and 56% by 2030.
• The rest of the world roughly doubles its annual build by 2030. Europe, the US, India and others move from catching up to scaling up.
• The direction is set; the pace could surprise. We expect new records almost every year, with global annual additions heading toward roughly 160 to 190 GW by 2030. However, our own 2025 forecast came in about 20% below what actually got built, so actual build-out could be higher than expected.
