Global large-scale storage power capacity has grown to two and a half times its 2020 level. Using Aegir Insights' global storage database, we mapped the operational subset by commissioning year, showing three clear trends:
By country, the build-out is heavily concentrated. China accounts for a little over half of all the capacity added since 2020, and China and the United States together for roughly three quarters of it. Australia, the United Kingdom and India follow. Germany added more individual projects than any other European market, but at an average size well under 10 MW, against nearly 50 MW in the United Kingdom. Storage has also arrived in markets that barely registered in 2020: Saudi Arabia, Chile, Bulgaria and Ukraine all now have grid-scale fleets. In total, 82 countries have brought at least one project of 1 MW or more online since 2020.
| # | Market | Capacity added (GW) | Projects added | Share | Avg size (MW) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | China | 115.3 | 762 | 53% | 151 |
| 2 | United States | 47.6 | 781 | 22% | 61 |
| 3 | Australia | 10.1 | 53 | 5% | 190 |
| 4 | United Kingdom | 6.9 | 147 | 3% | 47 |
| 5 | India | 4.7 | 11 | 2% | 423 |
| 6 | Saudi Arabia | 3.0 | 6 | 1% | 500 |
| 7 | Germany | 2.6 | 352 | 1% | 7 |
| 8 | Chile | 2.4 | 19 | 1% | 128 |
| 9 | Ukraine | 1.6 | 5 | 1% | 330 |
| 10 | Canada | 1.4 | 30 | 1% | 47 |
