Sizing the competition in Ireland’s RESS 6 auction

Map of Ireland showing the probable RESS 6 bidding field: 120 grid-contracted onshore wind and solar PV projects, one dot per project sized by offer MW, wind across the west and southwest, solar in the east and midlands.

Nobody publishes who may bid in RESS 6, so Aegir Insights reconstructed the potential field project by project from the public registers.

Applications to qualify for Ireland’s RESS 6 auction closed on 27 August 2026, with separate pots for onshore wind and solar. Qualification is a declaration regime, and across five rounds it has refused almost nobody: 399 projects applied and 347 qualified.

Only four of the criteria can be checked from public data. Aegir Insights therefore screened every grid-contracted onshore wind and solar project in Ireland against the RESS 6 rules, sizing the potential bidding field by eligibility to apply.

However, eligible does not mean bidding. Part of the reason is a trade-off: Once a project takes RESS support, it can no longer supply the new data center additionality obligation, and some developers will prefer to hold out for a corporate PPA.

For the background on that obligation, see how Ireland now requires new renewables for data center grid connections.

Clients have access to the new analysis, including the exclusion funnel, the evidence behind every project on the map, the split between strict and inferred eligibility, and our screening methodology.
