The primary way to enter the US offshore wind market so far has been through greenfield opportunities, where developers win a lease area in auctions managed by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM).

BOEM has a schedule of future lease auctions to come during 2024-2028, but with the presidential elections just around the corner, much of this pipeline is uncertain.

To counteract the uncertainty of the situation post-election, BOEM is currently hard at work to carry out as many auctions as possible before November.

The plan is to carry out three lease auctions pre-election; one off the Pacific coast and two off the Atlantic coast – with the two auctions in the Atlantic looking the most promising.
