During 2024 and 2025, several offshore wind auctions in Europe were unsuccessful, cancelled, or postponed, reflecting a challenging market environment.
However, this week, good news for offshore wind were announced in Ireland: The ORESS 2.1 auction has been successfully awarded, securing the 900 MW Tonn Nua site off Ireland's south coast. A consortium consisting of Ørsted and ESB has been named provisional winners, with a planned COD for the mid 2030’s.
At Aegir Insights, we have just published a new report, diving deeper into the awarded Irish ORESS 2.1 auction and analyzing the potential assumptions backing the winning bid price as well as next steps for Ireland.
Looking beyond Ireland, the year is not over for European offshore wind yet as several auctions are still currently ongoing or to be launched.
This raises the question: How attractive are these upcoming European auctions and which ones should developers prioritize?
