Four government-supported AI Growth Zones and 100 data center are planned in the UK. How can this create opportunities for nearby on- and offshore wind?
The UK is Europe’s biggest data center market, but most data centers are clustered around London, where the grid is already under pressure. The UK Government is actively trying to attract data center developers to areas outside London, namely the North and Wales, where land and power is more readily available.
As part of this strategy, AI Growth Zones will offer various benefits to data center developers, including discounts on electricity in the north and easier grid connection and/or opportunities to build transmission directly to a nearby electricity source.
This can create new offtake opportunities for the more than 20 GW onshore wind and 75 GW offshore wind projects in development or construction in the UK – of which most are in the north or Wales.
