Europe’s hybrid storage projects, mapped

Map of Europe's storage projects: Batteries co-located with a wind farm (dark teal), a solar park (light teal) or another host (pale teal), and all other storage projects in grey, operating to planned. Source: Aegir Storage Database, 12 October 2026.

Almost half of the European battery projects tracked in the Aegir Storage Database, from planning through to operation, are co-located with a wind farm, solar park or another host.

Aegir Insights tracks whether each battery project is standalone or co-located, and with which host technology. Combined with our wind and solar data, this reveals how battery capacity compares with that of the host project.

What the data shows:

  • Iberia and the Nordics are moving toward co-location: In Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Finland and Norway, a far larger share of planned batteries are co-located than of operating ones.
  • Solar parks host most co-located batteries: In Germany, almost all planned co-located batteries sit at a solar park, and in Spain a large majority.
  • The host shapes the size of the battery: Batteries at solar parks are generally larger, relative to their park, than batteries at wind farms.

With the Aegir Storage Database, developers can benchmark battery size against the park by market and screen where a battery could share an existing grid connection. Investors can see which markets are moving toward hybrid projects, and who is building them. With Aegir Quant™, our institutional-grade financial model, both can also see what a co-located battery adds to a project's IRR.

For an offshore wind example, see our modeling of what co-located storage does to offshore wind returns.
